How It Works

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) allows names like vitalik.eth to store far more than just an Ethereum address. Each ENS name can have a rich set of records attached to it through its resolver contract.

Record Types

• Multi-chain Addresses — An ENS name can store addresses for different blockchains (ETH, BTC, LTC, DOGE, etc.) using EIP-2304 and SLIP-44 coin types. Each coin type has a numeric identifier (e.g., ETH = 60, BTC = 0).
• Text Records — Arbitrary key-value pairs stored via EIP-634. Common keys include url, email, description, com.twitter, com.github, and avatar.
• Content Hash — Points to decentralized content via EIP-1577. Supports IPFS, IPNS, Swarm, Onion, and other protocols.
• Avatar — A special text record (avatar) that can reference an image URL, an NFT (eip155:1/erc721:...), or IPFS content.

On-Chain Resolution

This tool performs direct on-chain calls to read records from the resolver contract:

1. Find the Resolver — Queries the ENS Registry at 0x00000000000C2E074eC69A0dFb2997BA6C7d2e1e to find the resolver contract for the name.
2. Query Records — Calls the resolver's standard functions: addr(bytes32) for ETH address, addr(bytes32,uint256) for multi-chain addresses, text(bytes32,string) for text records, and contenthash(bytes32) for the content hash.
